animation from the 1990's

a bugs life/antz (1998)
a bugs life made by Pixar and Antz made by dream works are both 3d animated films that share a very simuler premises, this lead pixar/disney to believe that one of there former animation directors Jeffrey Katzenberg had stolen the idea and reworked it as he had created dream works after leaving. even though both films were  in the same year they are both considered successful    

gorillaz (1998)
gorillaz is a virtual band that consists of four animated members, Russel, Murdoc, noodle and 2-d, created by Bamon Aldarn from the rock band blur and Jamie Hewlett who was the comic artist behind the character designs, Bamon and Jamie formed the band in response to what they where seeing on MTV at the time because they believed it was all just senseless, mindless music videos.  

perfect blue (1998)
directed by satoshi kon perfect blue is a psychological horror film about a pop star getting stalked, told from multiple different perspectives, it was done like this to deliberately be confusing and surreal to reflect the mentally disturbed state of the pop star character.

usa cartoons
Futurama (1999): tv series set in the future and follows (primarily) Philip.J.Fry who is from the past but was put into cryostasis by accident.
Family guy(1999): a family sitcom styled tv series that follows the non-canonical problems the Griffin family endure.
Spongebob squarepants(1999): children's show about anthropomorphized sea creatures and there episodic adventures.

the periwig maker (1999)
directed by Steffen Schaffler the periwig maker is a stop motion short film based on Daniel Defoe's book A Journal of the Plague Year, which is a story set in London during the great plague and how a wig maker is isolated from the world outside due to it.

the old man and the sea
a short animated film by Alesandr Petrov based off the book the old man and the sea written by Ernest Hemingway, made using slow drying oil paints and changing them to animate them,  

the wolfman (1999)
a absurdist short film made by tim hope, made purposely with lo-fi computer animation/ lo-fi is the opposite to hi-fi, the story follows a man becoming a wolf man but has no context, done to create comical effect with how crazy it is, an example of this is in the dialogue "i am the wolf man, i hate being bored and i can punch suns". hope whent onto produce music videos of bands such as cold plays trouble and dont panic, also did some animated sequences in the Mighty Boosh  

sink
sink was a advertising campaign consisting of 3-d animated advertisements made in japan by Satoshi Tomioka who worked with both commercials and his own independent animations leading him to make advertisements for Honda and Japanese rail  

pixar shorts
originally pixar created (primarily) short films to acquire more skills, find different processes and test new technology's, examples of this are Geri's game (1997) and for the birds (2000) that in the process of making those short films learned how to make feature length ones.

the man with the beautiful eyes (2000)
created by Jonathan Hodgson this short film was based of a poem about people not wanting others to succeed or be different, it was done non-digitally with paint, ink and collage in the stylings of children drawings, and even though Hodgson describes it as bad animation in won the BAFTA for best animated short

father and daughter(2000)
directed by Michael Dudok de wit father and daughter is a short film about a daughter missing her father and waiting for him to return visiting the same spot he left her and several points in her life, it won three British film awards and a Oscar for best short film in 2001
