Group project part 11

Compositing

most of hungry seagulls production team and myself had to learn how to do compositing due to the compositing team being to few to finish their job on time.

the scene i was given to work on had many moving parts and was very difficult working on, due to a accident on set the camera was shoulder mounted and even after using after effects camera stabilization function the movement caused allot of problems using masks on this scene.

the first thing i did (after getting given the right version of the scene that moves somewhat less) was creating a 3d tracking camera and matching it to the wall were the shadows ran across, this allowed the animations to move from the background to the foreground, then i made all the masks for the pipes that run up the walls and animate them to match the movement of the camera, then a mask that outlines the main character as they walk up the alleyway, this was the most time consuming part of these tasks and as a result had the compositors needing help.
the next thing was creating the shadows and timing them correctly to move when needed, i set the layer mode to soft light, giving the lines a transparent effect blending them in with the background, then using an "old paper" texture, created a displacement map creating a warping effect. lastly the animations needed to appear blurred in the distance and in focus when close, doing this involved creating a layer with a gradient between white and black and using it to create a blur map on the same layer as the shadows.
