films or music that are a adaptions of other films or music can be protected under copyright law if they can be proven to be a parody/ a imitation altered for comedic effect.
1/2. Austin powers/johnny English
both of these film series are parody's of the original English secret agent 007/James bond but both have adapted the story and characters far enough from the inspiration to avoid copyrighting the original content , however the parody's are not similar to each other as they have different types of humor and are based of different time periods in the James bond franchise.
3."weird Al" Yankovic
weird al has created a large collection of parody songs that put a spin of the original songs title and use the same/ similar instrumentals however all lyrics have been changed for comedic effect and because of this and his large audience gained though its appealing humor confirmed that they are in fact parody's .
4. Shawn of the dead
its obvious to fans of the zombie/horror genre that the title of this film is a spin-of of dawn of the dead, however this parody is more of a parody of all the zombie movies from that era,1970-80's because it has no direct correlation with a individual film it cant be labeled as copyrighted.
5.scary movie franchise
the scary movies are films that parody several other films,often horror in themselves, however the segments within the films that are parodying another are different enough from the source material wilts for some in a comedic fashion (not everyone is a fan of the style of humor) allow it to avoid copyright infringement.
